Upstate 2024 - Summer 2016 Team Recap

Note from Coaches DT Benedict (Head Coach at Churchville Chili), Brandon Barker (Ohio State- Midfield), Billy Lombardi (Penn State - Fogo) & Jake Messimer (Stevens Institute of Technology alumni):

It was a great summer for the 2024's, the team started improving from the very first day. This season we focused on key developmental skills at practice - rotating defense, running 6 v 6 offense, clears, limiting turnovers and offense and defense to help capitalize on transition opportunities. These skills are key to the success of the game and something that each player should continue to focus on developing throughout their careers.

Tournament recap:

Lake Placid: We lost our first game but the boys were determined to get another chance to play that same talented team. In order for them to do that they needed to win out the rest of the tournament and meet them in the Finals. The boys were up to the challenge and met that same opponent, overcame a 2 goal deficit in the second half and took the tournament Championship in Lake Placid in a double overtime thriller!!

Liberty Bell: This was a tough tournament with very formidable opponents. As the boys did in Placid, their first opponent got the best of them and they lost in overtime. Following the game the boys talked, got together and decided it was another opportunity to seek revenge for a first round loss. They won in dominating fashion the remainder of the games on Saturday. Come Sunday they met a challenge in a team that was comprised of some 6th and 7th graders. Although their best wasn't enough for the first time they played them, the following game in which this larger team was the opponent, they won which led them to the tournament finals. The boys fought hard in the Finals only falling short by 1 goal. We were very proud of their efforts in Philadelphia!

Stowe: The last tournament of the summer was in beautiful Stowe, Vermont. In an undesirable pattern, the boys lost their first game of the tournament. However, they again found themselves playing for another tournament championship because of their focus and hard work! The team they faced in the finals was a team who they had beaten by 5 the last time they played them. But when they faced off in the championship the 2024's found themselves down by 4 beginning the 2nd half of the game. Patiently and methodically they chipped away at the 4 goal lead and with 2 minutes left on the clock they took the lead. In the final play of the game, the 2024's found themselves making a tremendous defensive stand and with an all or nothing clear to secure the championship the ending of the tournament as well as the summer season was a thrilling come from behind victory!

This season for the 2024's was challenging and filled with hard work and perseverance. The entire team experienced growth in their lacrosse IQ and their abilities, something we were all very proud of.

WHAT WE WANT TO SEE EACH PLAYER FOCUS ON THEIR PERSONAL TIME:

  • Dodging and going to the goal (use a cone or trash can as your opponent)
  • Wall ball 30 minutes each day (15 minutes on each hand)
  • Decision making in game time scenarios (your lacrosse IQ) -- watch youtube videos, go to lacrosse games and watch your position, work with a friend in your backyard, attend clinics, etc. -- Sweetlax also offers Box Lacrosse
